Many caregivers notice behavioral differences in their loved ones long before medical professionals do. This educational seminar aims to inform and empower caregivers about the various behaviors, differences, and medical conditions that often co-occur with Down syndrome. Our goal is to equip caregivers with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for their loved ones and navigate the complex healthcare system that may overlook individual differences.
The panel will cover essential topics such as autism spectrum disorder, cortical vision impairment, ADHD, and Down Syndrome Regression. We will address critical questions like, “What could these behaviors mean?” when encountering behaviors not typically associated with Down syndrome, “What should I do if I think my self-advocate needs an evaluation?” and “Where can I turn for additional support?”
By the end of this seminar, caregivers will feel empowered and equipped with the tools and resources needed to start the journey of finding additional support their loved ones if they choose.
Child Policy at Education Seminars: We strive to create a professional learning environment for all adults who attend our educational sessions, and in respect of the speakers providing their expertise to our community. Therefore, the minimum age that one is allowed to attend our conference educational sessions is 13 years old. Other children are not allowed, with the exception of babies in arms (approximately 12 months or younger), who can be quietly cared for by a parent or legal guardian. We ask that parents please use their discretion when deciding whether or not to bring their child to a seminar. If a child is disruptive to other attendees, and the parent or guardian is not voluntarily leaving the room, the parent or guardian will be asked by a staff member to leave the room with the child until the child can quietly return to the session.
Inclusion of Teen and Adult Self-Advocates: Per caregiver discretion, teen and adult self-advocates are welcome to attend educational sessions with their caregiver. You are welcome to notify DSI staff if your loved one needs accommodation for optimal learning.
