Down Syndrome Innovations
5916 Dearborn St, Mission, KS

Complimentary

Why is inclusion so important for our loved ones with Down syndrome? What does inclusion look like.. in schools, in places of worship, on vacations, in the workplace? How do we make sure they have the best opportunities possible to be integrated with their peers? What do I do as a parent when my child is not being included? What if my child is struggling in an inclusive social environment because of his sensory difficulties or behaviors? How do I balance getting my child highly individualized or specialized support for skill-development in specific areas of delay while also ensuring inclusive opportunities and experiences that will enhance her social development? What is my role in advocating for system change and how do I get my voice heard by key stakeholders and decision makers, and where do I find the time and energy to do that? Many parents ask these questions and so many more.

Down Syndrome Innovations is hosting this facilitated round table discussion for parents and caregivers with loved ones with Down syndrome of all ages. The goal of this educational event is to provide a positive, healthy, and safe space for a discussion on inclusion specifically, where we share and listen to diverse perspectives, and also focus on actionable strategies that we can apply to daily life in our home and community. Most importantly, we will lean into one another and encourage and strengthen one another as fellow advocates, caregivers, and champions for our children.

An agenda and a list of speakers will be developed based on the interests and unique contributions of the participating parents expressed in the registration forms. Speakers will have time limits on stories and testimonies to maintain positive momentum during our time together. Time will be allotted at the end also for open dialogue.

If you would like to attend, please fill out the registration below and reflect on whether you would like to listen and learn, provide constructive advice or positive testimony, or both.

Child Policy at Education Seminars

We strive to create a professional learning environment for all adults who attend our educational sessions, and in respect of the speakers providing their expertise to our community. Therefore, the minimum age that one is allowed to attend our conference educational sessions is 13 years old. Other children are not allowed, with the exception of babies in arms (approximately 12 months or younger), who can be quietly cared for by a parent or legal guardian. We ask that parents please use their discretion when deciding whether or not to bring their child to a seminar. If a child is disruptive to other attendees, and the parent or guardian is not voluntarily leaving the room, the parent or guardian will be asked by a staff member to leave the room with the child until the child can quietly return to the session.

Inclusion of Teen and Adult Self-Advocates

Per caregiver discretion, teen and adult self-advocates are welcome to attend educational sessions with their caregiver. You are welcome to notify DSI staff if your loved one needs accommodation for optimal learning.
